What My Son Has to Say to Dan Cathy of Chick-Fil-A

Dear Mr. Dan Cathy,

My uncle is gay.  I love my uncle and his boyfriend and all of his friends. We have fun and hangout. I don’t think it is right for you to give money to stop my uncle from getting married.

People who are gay are humans just like us. They are not different in any way.  They are just people who want to be in love and get married to people of the same sex.  I feel sad for my uncle because he should have the same rights as me.

This is just like when black people didn’t have the same rights as white people. They were born the way they were born and should have the same rights as us.

This is why I think you should stop all this nonsense.  Gay people should be treated with equal rights.

I’m going to tell other people that they shouldn’t eat at Chick-Fil-A.

I can’t believe you said the things you said, because you say you are a Christian and you are supposed to act rightful and respectful and not say that people aren’t created equal. Especially gays and lesbians.  I’m a Christian too.

When you say mean things, gay people get their feelings hurt and when that happens Jesus wishes he could do something to help them. Like make a miracle.

When you get to heaven I think that Jesus will say “you made the wrong decision, man.”

I used to eat at Chick-Fil-A a lot and now I don’t want to eat there until gay people win in the end.  Now I’m going to eat at subway. It’s healthier anyway.

Sincerely,

C.J.’s Brother, Age 9

Orange County, Calif.

Former Chick-Fil-A Foothill Ranch Customer

Your son is an incredible person. I hope that one day I’ll have the honour to meet him.

“Now I’m going to eat at subway. It’s healthier anyway.” You’re family are so awesome. You truly have been blessed! I love reading your blog, it’s a constant source of hope and inspiration for me. Keep it up!

He’s a cool guy. Yup. He is.
I used to love Chick Fil A…..
    I can’t believe it…:(

  7. mx. punk says:

will you please give your son a high five for me? cuz he seems awesome.

  8. F.J. says:

Did you see the article in the New York Times about gender variant kids? Maybe you could write about your thoughts on it.

  9. DAVID A MORSE says:

CJ has a great big brother. Never forget what you wrote here. Your uncle, his boyfriend, and CJ, will need loving family like you. Always be there for CJ, he has many hard times ahead. I wish he did not.

  10. Mandy says:

I have friend’s on facebook that could learn a big lesson from your son on voicing your opinion in a respectful and intelligent manner.

  11. I’m so sad about the Chick-Fil-A controversy and how it’s playing out. I can’t imagine being you or your family in this climate. I posted a plea for civility on my blog, with a mention of your family’s experience, called A Few Thoughts for the Chicken-Buyers and the Chicken-Boycotters. Perhaps together we can all change the discourse.

  12. Kirsti says:

YES! Articulate, passionate, compelling, all without a single mean-spirited word. CJ’s Bro, you’ve raised the bar for civil discourse (look it up), and we need more of that in our world. You’re a true advocate for justice. Our family won’t be eating at CFA anymore, and I’ve shared your post with my friends. (PS – keep writing, CJ’s Bro!)

  13. Kristen Smith says:

Love this letter from CJ’s brother! He’s so thoughtful and well spoken, I am madly impressed. I reposted it, I hope you don’t mind. 🙂

  14. I love following your blog. Although I’ve been going back and forth on this whole Chick-fil-a thing, I do advocate for the LGBT community and have many friends within that community – all of whom I love and support! I have some friends (both “straight” and LGBT) completely against CFA and others still eating there despite the views they have. I have told many people about your blog and the unconditional love you and your husband have for CJ.

I wrote a blog post yesterday titled Stop.The.Hate and mentioned your blog. I hope my post will reach at least one person who will find your page and forever be changed by it! Keep up the great work and thank you for being so open and honest about a subject that has so many people hiding in shame. This is a link to my post – http://geminired.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/stop-the-hate/

I hope it is an honest reflection of the admiration I have for you, your family and CJ. I believe CJ will change the world!

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one! When I posted an article about Dan Cathy’s remarks AND the fact that Chick-Fil-A donates to Exodus International, all my Facebook friends could say was, “Yeah, but he has freedom of speech” (yes they certainly do, but we as consumers have freedom to choose not to give them money based on what they say) and “But they have good chicken.” I was SHOCKED. I didn’t ask for anyone to stop eating there, I merely posted an article.

But there were my friends saying, “So what if they don’t want you to get married …or be gay? I like their food.” 😦

So thank you. It means a lot to me.

CJ’s family is very lucky to have CJ’s brother around. I hope I get to vote for him for president some day.

  18. ally says:

I used to go to the one down the street literally almost every day. Sometimes more than once a day. I don’t cook and I love their food so it’s not easy for me to give it up but I just cannot think about ever giving them another cent of my money. Every time I get tempted, I just think about that arrogant p.o.s. Dan Cathy, snickering, “Guilty as charged” Proud to be a homophobe. After this story broke, I literally spent all day on Huffingtonpost.com debating this on message boards until it wore me out. I was amazed who feel that Mr. Cathy’s rights to free speech are the issue. He can speak freely all day long but when he funnels money into groups who seek to limit other people’s civil rights, that’s where the line is crossed. I got so beat down by all the illogical rants and it left me feeling very depressed that there are so many out there who have no ability to think for themselves. They just parrot whatever they hear and do not understand the hypocrisy of standing up for Mr. Cathy’s “rights” to tell other people who they can or cannot marry. Sigh…..

  19. Meg says:

Regardless of Chick-Fil-A’s stance on various issues… I’m very impressed that your 9 yr old son had the strength and conviction to write a letter like that. He’s a smart little guy, and with passion like that, he’s sure to go far! We need more kids like that in the world – willing to stand up for a cause they believe in. You guys gotta be proud of him. 🙂

  20. Todd says:

I’m all for equal rights for all. So, … Does anyone give a damn about the poor chickens?

Way to raise two badass kids, CJ’s Mom! 🙂 I’m so incredibly HAPPY there will be a fine young man like CJ’s Brother in the world one day, such a decent person that I think unfortunately is becoming more and more rare… Such a shame not many parents are concerned with their kids’ character as you seem to be, but at the same time, your blog gives me hope for the future. 🙂 Thank you.

  22. Rachael says:

Well, you’re obviously doing something right! 🙂 That’s a great letter, and I’m so happy that he wrote it. Also, I love the end. Let’s ALL eat at Subway!

  23. Bold Wandering says:

CJ’s brother is inspiring, thanks for sharing.

  24. Jeff Laws says:

“This is just like when black people didn’t have the same rights as white people. They were born the way they were born and should have the same rights as us.”

Never thought of it that way, so true and well said CJ’s brother.

  25. Denny Spargo says:

    CJ’s brother rocks! Well said.

  26. Kat says:

Good for CJ’s brother! Wonderful letter.

  27. Isabelle says:

Awesome letter!! Great job CJ’s brother!!

  28. Brandi says:

I just love CJ and CJs brother, Uncle Uncle, and all of you! We won’t be eating at Chik-Fila anymore either.

  29. Ms. Herbert says:

    Good going CJ’s Brother.

FYI there is another issue with these idiots. They use peanut oil and try to convince people it is so pure that people with peanut allergy will not react. I have had people try and convince me it is safe for me to eat. Since I’ve landed in the ER twice from breathing in aerated oil from deep fryers at public events, I don’t believe their lies. I hope that Mr. Cathy on down are held criminally responsible when they kill someone probably a child with their “pure peanut oil”

Of course they should already be facing charges as terrorists for their actions in Africa. I’m sure murdering child “witches” is a crime.

  30. B says:

Loved your post and the simplistic terms it is written in. I’m tired of hearing how it is a “complex” issue. It’s truly not. We’re all human beings and deserve equal rights. How complex is that?

I just wrote a similar post, and am glad to see other moms speak out as well!

  31. It takes strength and courage to do the right thing, well done CJ’s brother, well done. The right side will win because fear isn’t the driving force. Chick-fil-f and their cronies use fear to make their decisions. They will still have fear in the end. The rest of the world will have empathy and kindness, easier to live with. The future is bright because of people like you.

  32. janna0531 says:

Great letter! In this world where there is so much judgement and hatred, it is so important to teach our children about diversity and to be tolerant of all people. As a Christian, I teach my children to treat others the same way that they would like to be treated. It sounds like you have passed these values on to your son. Great job mom!

  33. Tommy says:

Great letter! I think the real change is going to come through franchisee owners who sue the company in a class action law suit for damaging their businesses through his espoused bigotry. Did this arrogant hater learn nothing from Carl Karcher?? He got booted from his own company by his own board of directors because of his similar actions. Besides, a friend of mine with food allergies pointed out that MSG is among the top 5 ingredients in all their food.

    • karifur says:

Sadly, this doesn’t appear to have damaged Chick-fil-A’s business at all; in fact, maybe even the opposite. A friend of mine in Arizona posted about how the restaurant near her house had a line around the block on “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day”. The restaurant had run out of food before 2 in the afternoon.

  34. Annie says:

    Brav-O!

  35. Chatter Master says:

What a wonderful family you have. Kind. Compassionate. Respectful of others. Truly these are the family values we want and need.

  36. tbunni331 says:

CJ’s brother is awesome. Maybe what Chick-Fil-A is doing is really a good thing in disguise: hatred and bigoty brought out in the open for all to see, and for caring people to reject that behavior. Thank you for raising your wonderful kids to see and care for everyone. If more parents could do that, this world would be a much better place!

  37. Thomas says:

Love, love, love this. What a well-written letter – great job to him and his parents!

  38. Stephanie Baker-Harden says:

    Well said CJ’s brother!

  39. Thanks for this! Brave, loving, and true!

  40. StillValerie says:

Good for you, C J’s brother, for standing up for your uncle and others in the LGBT community and making your voice heard. We don’t have Chick-Fil-A in Canada but I’m supportive of your position.

  41. DenguyFL says:

Dan Cathy has done some good then. He has awoken C.J.’s brother to the discrimination his uncle and (maybe) his brother face each and every day.

  42. Maggie says:

Wow. What a smart, caring little boy. And I agree with everything he said. I too will be boycotting Chick-Fil-A, C.J.’s brother!

  43. Amy says:

Praise God for CJ’s big brother!!!

  44. I used to love Chick-Fil-A! Not anymore they don’t deserve customers!
