We have discovered another great book for/about gender creative kids. C.J. really, really, really loves this one. Seriously, it’s one of his new favorites. He would like you to know that the book “rhymes really great” and has “pretty collage pictures” and it’s “about a boy who likes girl stuff.”
Roland Humphrey is Wearing a WHAT? by Eileen Kiernan-Johnson is a new children’s picture book about a boy’s quest to be his authentic pink and sparkly self in a world that is often inhospitable to boys who don’t conform to strict gender norms around boys dress and play.
It’s a tale that finds Roland as confused about the rules as those around him are about what he wears. In a humorous journey that raises questions about what is normal and why, Roland Humphrey is a gorgeously illustrated book that will open the minds and hearts to accept and cherish the Roland Humphreys of the world.
Roland Humphrey is a fictional version of a real boy; a boy having a happy childhood that doesn’t fit into a conventional box of what others may expect of a boy. He’s not constrained by what he wears, what colors he likes or how he plays with other kids. Watching a beautiful child grow up, we are seeing how our Roland Humphrey is running into other people’s expectations of how he should behave.
Author Eileen Kiernan-Johnson has been kind enough to offer the book to Raising My Rainbow readers for $10.99 and ship it for free. To get this offer:

- Easy peasy cheddar cheesy (as C.J. would say)
I was just introduced to your blog today and have been reading like mad from the first post. Your family is AMAZING and inspirational!! I wanted to share a website with you after reading a few of your earlier posts. You may already know it or know the information it contains, but it has really been an amazing website for me. It answered so many questions I had and laid to rest so many conflicts I have faced since childhood. When someone first suggested it to me, I came up with excuse after excuse to not look at it because I was afraid it would just bring more conflict, judgement, and heartbreak. That is not the case. It is a “safe” website for you to look at. http://www.gaychristian101.com p.s. I’m not labeling anyone. That is just the name of the website. Thanks for sharing your beautiful child with the world via blog!!!!
Just sent her an email. I can’t wait to add this to my ‘library’ and share it with my grandson.
Thank you!
Thank you 🙂 I look forward to sharing this with my family and with my 2 and 3 year old students!!
I’m going to order this book STAT! Thank you!
I really wish there had been books like this when my son was younger. He is almost 15 now and when he was younger I was certain he was the only child that was the way he was. It took a lot for us to convince the people around him to accept him as himself and they did eventually 🙂
Reading Raising my Rainbow gives us hope for the world.
Thank you so much!! Sounds awesome! Looking forward to sharing this with my son.
Thank you!!! Can’t wait to read this book with my son. Sounds perfect.
